The invention relates to a method for the direct identification of the ISO 8608 road roughness coefficient (Gd(n0)) using an inspection trailer. Road roughness evaluation plays a key role in pavement maintenance and management; however, conventional approaches rely on complex power spectral density (PSD) curve-fitting procedures, resulting in low efficiency and computational burden. The present method provides a simplified response-type approach that enables direct estimation of the ISO 8608 roughness coefficient from field-measured acceleration data without PSD fitting.
By establishing a correlation between the averaged maximum absolute accelerations of the vehicle body obtained from continuously measured road segments (typically 100 meters in length) along the surveyed route and the developed theoretical relationship, the disclosed method enables accurate and efficient classification of pavement roughness levels in accordance with ISO 8608 standards. The results of Monte Carlo simulations further verify the accuracy, stability, and practical applicability of the proposed method for evaluating road surface roughness.
