This invention discloses a novel 3D ink jet printing process, in which polyisocyanate (as a reactive fusion agent) is applied to a preheated build material (e.g., polyamides, thermoplastic polyurethanes in powder form) to a temperature below its melting point. This is followed by exposing the build material and the applied reactive fusion agent to near-infrared radiation to initiate exothermic crosslinking polymerization of the fusion agent with the build material. As a result, the temperature of the printing region increases to a point above the melting point of the polymer powder, thereby leading to the formation of a part layer.
